Luna
2016-007
Update: March 29: Luna underwent surgery for what was suspected to be stump pyometra but turned out to be a far more complicated issue. A large mass was found attached to her bladder and twisted around her ureter. The mass was successfully removed and we are awaiting the pathology report to determine what we are dealing with.
Luna is currently hospitalized recovering from surgery -- the next few days will determine how extensive the damage is to her ureter and what further treatment may be required.
The cost of Luna's diagnostics, surgery and treatment is now in the thousands. Donations to help cover the cost of Luna's care are appreciated. Visit our donation page to learn more about making a donation to our program -- a tax receipt will be issued for your generous support.

All about Luna
Sweet and sensitive, Luna is an affectionate girl who is looking for someone to work on her training and give her lots of opportunities for socialization to experience new sights and sounds. This quiet girl has been through a lot in recent weeks and is settling into a calm, quiet, loving foster home. This little gem will be a great companion for a loving family who have the time to work with her and help her blossom.
Luna is a great candidate for obedience work as she needs to improve her leash manners and to build confidence. A handler who is physically able to do some training with Luna will be the right match for her. Luna does not appear to know any commands, so her foster family have begun teaching her the basics. She is eager to please and is catching on quickly. Good girl Luna!
She is used to a rural environment and is understandably overwhelmed by all of the sights, sounds and activities in a city setting. With a confident handler at her side Luna will benefit from getting out and learning about the world at a nice slow pace. A comprehensive socialization and manners training program has begun and she is doing very well. She has loads of potential and with a bit of work she will really come along nicely.
Sadly, after being used as a brood bitch by a non-reputable breeder, she was then sent to someone to be used as a service dog--this person was told that she was fully trained and an excellent dog for this role. Upon arrival in Ontario it was discovered that her complete lack of training and poor socialization make her totally unsuitable for this role. Her poor leash manners, coupled with her fear of new and unknown things made the match extremely dangerous for both Luna and the person who hoped to use her as a service dog. The decision was made to turn her over to us for training and treatment of her very serious and life threatening health issues (see below for those details).
She was spayed a few weeks prior to arriving in our care, but upon intake it was noted that she had suspicious blood/mucus leakage. She was promptly taken for veterinary care, and an ultrasound showed what appeared to be stump pyometra, a potentially deadly infection. During surgery it was discovered that she actually had a large mass on her bladder/ureter, which was successfully removed. We are awaiting the pathology report to determine what the next step in her treatment will be.
On arrival Luna was suffering from severe flea bite dermatitis from an untreated flea infestation. YUCK -- poor girl! This totally preventable condition is very uncomfortable and can lead to serious health issues if left untreated. Luna is currently being treated to help clear her skin lesions and ears -- after a good scrub, some meds, and loads of love she is already starting to feel much better and no longer chewing herself raw. Typical of dogs who have lived in flea infested environments, Luna has patchy fur, and very itchy, inflamed skin. She also has tapeworm as a result of her flea infestation, as well as nasty hook and whip worms. Ick. Due to the heavy infestation of parasites she is very underweight and in poor physical condition. With proper care and treatment she will feel so much better and should be in very good shape soon. We expect Luna to make a full recovery and she will be ready for adoption in early/mid-April.

Luna gets along well with other dogs and is happiest when she has other dogs around her for company. We are looking for a home where she will have another canine pal to romp and play with. She is also fine with cats so could join a family where there is a dog savvy cat.
Luna is gentle around children and could join a family with respectful children over the age of 5, or a home where children visit.
Luna is allegedly a purebred Newf although she is a small, light boned girl (similar looking to a spaniel in some ways!) weighing under 100 lbs. Her coat is brown and white in colour, which is not a recognized colour for Newfoundland dogs, but she is a cute little girlie! On occasion we have Newfs come through our program who have this off-standard coat colour. This is something which is seen from unscrupulous kennels who do not breed to the correct standard of the breed and who have no regard for preserving the traits of the breed. You can learn more about coat colour and the breed standard by reading our article Identifying BYB.
Luna is being fostered in the Toronto area. Her approved adopters will be required to pick her up in person. An adoption donation will apply.
