The Empty House on The Coast

Somewhere along the coastline I?m on top of a huge green hill. The hill is this vivid green color, which is littered with the various bright colors of wildflowers. The hill has this funnel shape and at the bottom of the hill is this house. ?What a curious location for a house,? I?ve thought to myself. My curiosity takes over and I want to investigate this home. I want to walk around it and possibly go inside. As opposed to walking down the hill I happen to have a piece of cardboard, which I lay down on and let gravity do the rest. As I?m barreling towards this mystery house I wake up. Often when I have reoccurring dreams they involve houses. I had this particular version of the dream when I was about fourteen years old.

As the years have passed by I?ve had different variants of this reoccurring dream revolving around a house. Most often I find myself wandering through a thicket of cypress trees, under the cover of the moonlight. Although there is a layer of fog present I never have any difficultly finding my way through the thicket. I can hear the sounds of waves crashing against the shore and I never have any feelings of anxiety while I travel through the Cypress grove. When I finally reach the clearing I see this house near the lands end. The house is usually of Spanish Mediterranean or ?modern? architecture and always has at least two levels to it. In my most recent dreams I usually gain access to the house by simply walking through the front door. The house is usually empty although there was one occasion where there was a family living there but no one was home (more on that in a bit). I usually just walk through the house and explore it. The house is always empty and barren and seems as if it was recently built. I always feel happy as I walk through exploring the house.

There was one occasion where I ended up at the house under the same circumstances as mentioned above. As I was walking up the stair case in the house I came to a landing. On the landing was a table, which had a picture frame resting on it. I picked up the picture frame and saw a portrait of a family. I didn?t recognize anyone in the picture. As I?m viewing the picture I hear a door open and assume that the occupants of the house have arrived home. Suddenly a rush of panic washes over me as I gather my thoughts in order to make my way out of the house undetected. I end up finding my way out of the house undetected. This was the last dream I remember involving a house and I had this dream several years ago.

I?ve never put much thought into the symbolism or archetype (according the Jung) that the house represents in my dreams. After conducting some internet research the consensus was that the house represents your physical being much like ?my body is a temple.? After thinking over how this new, yet empty house represents myself I?ve come to the following conclusion. For the past several years (after I left my career) I?ve been trying to latch onto a new identity. When I was younger all I wanted to do was the prior career I had obtained. However this career wasn?t how I envisioned it to be and now I?ve had to reinvent myself, which hasn?t been an easy process. Although I?m on track to get where I want to be in the future I often feel as If I should?ve been doing what I?m currently doing years ago. This would explain why the house is empty and I?m constantly exploring it. The house is new and unscathed representing the fact that I?m still in the process of my reinvention.
